The Weekend Escape

NO. 1 · SATURDAY, JULY 18 · LAKE KEOWEE

Tuesdays, we send you the math. Saturdays, starting today, we send you the reason for it. One place, one weekend, planned the way a friend who lives there would plan it for you. No listicles, no sponsored anything. This first one starts where the argument is strongest: a Saturday morning on the water at Lake Keowee.

A Saturday on Lake Keowee

The Keowee Weekend itinerary over an aerial of the cove and its waterfall: Friday drinks on the dock, Saturday golf and quiet coves, Sunday coffee on the water

The Keowee Weekend, hour by hour. Built to be saved, sent, and stolen.

Early.  The lake is at its best before nine. Keowee is a deep, clean, emerald-green reservoir framed by the Blue Ridge, and on a July morning the water is glass and the mountains still hold a little haze. Coffee on the dock or the porch, and the only schedule item is deciding whether the morning belongs to the boat or the first tee.

Morning.  The water gets the first vote. This is the argument for Keowee over every busier lake in the region: protected coves, swimmable water, and enough shoreline that a Saturday never feels crowded. If it is golf instead, you are spoiled here too. Four Cliffs courses were just named to Golfweek's 2026 Top 200 Residential Courses list, and the network's newest showcase sits at Keowee Springs.

Afternoon.  The Cliffs' Lake Region has been building, and it shows. The recently opened Lake Club and the Keowee Springs clubhouse anchor the social day, and the new Sports Pavilion adds padel to the tennis, pickleball, and the resort pool. This is the part of the tour where visiting families go quiet and start recalculating their summers.

Evening.  Dinner at the clubhouse as the light goes long over the water, or back at the dock with something off the grill. The point of Keowee is not a scene. The point is that Saturday here does not require a reservation strategy.

The only schedule item is deciding whether the morning belongs to the boat or the first tee.

One membership at The Cliffs spans seven clubs, from the lake to the Blue Ridge ridgelines above Greenville and Asheville, so a Keowee address carries mountain golf and cooler-evening dinners with it. Two locals-only notes for the drive: Thursday evenings, Seneca's Jazz on the Alley fills Ram Cat Alley ten minutes from the Keowee gates, the closest thing the lake has to a standing social hour. And mark September now: the inaugural Biltmore Championship brings the PGA TOUR to The Cliffs at Walnut Cove September 17-20, Asheville's first TOUR event in more than 80 years.

THE LAND THAT FITS THE WEEKEND

Canebrake at Keowee Falls · Twelve New Homesites

For buyers who want to hold the view before they build the house: Canebrake at Keowee Falls just released twelve new homesites, $375,000 to $1.895 million, including dockable lots, the scarcest asset on the lake.

The full tour of the lake's communities, gates, and price bands lives in our Lake Keowee field guide.

Every Weekend Escape is built to be forwarded. Send this one to the person you would actually spend it with: the college roommate who keeps scouting lakes, the parents who threaten to visit every summer, the friend whose Saturdays need rescuing.

If a friend sent you this one, welcome. The Escape lands every Saturday at 8 AM, and it is free.

That is the first Saturday. Next week we go where the horses are: Tryon. If there is a market you want a Saturday planned for, reply and name it. The most-requested one gets written.
